Few American cities were as closely tied to tobacco as Richmond, and this wood engraving shows the tobacco exchange at the corner of Virginia and Cary Streets in 1867. It appeared in *Harper's Weekly*, the illustrated national magazine that often sent artists to report on the postwar South, so it reflects how outside readers saw the city's commercial life just two years after the Civil War. Richmond had long been a center of Virginia's tobacco trade, with warehouses and factories handling leaf from surrounding farms.
