The Lee Monument stands at the center of Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, where a bronze equestrian statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee rises on a tall granite pedestal. French sculptor Antonin Mercié created the statue, which was unveiled in 1890, and the avenue developed around it as a boulevard lined with later memorials. This glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century. The view records the monument in the years when the avenue was becoming one of Richmond's most prominent streets.
