Libby Hill Park sits on a bluff overlooking the James River on Richmond's east side, and this view centers on the Confederate Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument rising above it. Memorials like this went up across the South in the decades after the Civil War, as communities honored their dead and shaped how the conflict would be remembered in public space. The photograph dates to about 1908 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad survey of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century.
