Libby Hill Park sits on a bluff overlooking the James River in Richmond, Virginia, and this view centers on the park's gazebo, the structure that gave the spot its most photographed look in the early twentieth century. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that ran a large commercial photography business and sold views of towns, parks and scenic sites to railroads, postcard makers and the public. Its glass plates, made roughly between 1905 and 1920, give a clear record of how a Southern city presented its green spaces to visitors in that era. Notice how the open lawn and the gazebo's ornamental form reflect the Victorian and Edwardian taste for civic pleasure grounds.
