Libby Prison stood on Carey Street in Richmond, Virginia, where Union officers were held during the Civil War in a converted warehouse built for the tobacco and grocery trade. This 1865 side view, made as a wet collodion glass stereograph, shows the building's long brick walls and rows of windows from an angle that reveals its size. Mathew Brady's studio is credited with the picture, which was compiled in the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection. The prison became one of the best-known Confederate detention sites, and images like this one record a structure that many Northern readers knew from accounts of its conditions.
