Libby Hill Park sits on a bluff in Richmond's East End, and this view includes the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument rising in the background, a reminder of how the city honored its Civil War dead. Libby Hill was known for its open views over the James River and the city, which made it a popular spot for visitors and residents in the early 1900s. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of travel views of American towns and landmarks during that period. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves the sharp detail of the park's paths, trees, and monument.
