The Old Hillard homestead in Richmond, Virginia, is recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, one of the larger plates from the Detroit Publishing Company's early work. The picture dates from between 1900 and 1910, when the company sent photographers across the country to document towns, rural scenes and older buildings. Its views were widely sold as prints and postcards, and the negatives later passed to the Library of Congress. The cabin's plain form and its setting offer a glimpse of how households in the Richmond area lived before the city grew much larger.
