The State Penitentiary in Richmond, Virginia, is the focus here, a prison complex that stood in the city during the final year of the Civil War. Photographs of Confederate government buildings and institutions were widely sold after Richmond fell in April 1865, and this view belongs to that wave of images. The print was issued by Taylor & Huntington, a firm that published Civil War scenes for a public eager to see the South's capital after its surrender. The facility was used to hold prisoners during the war, so the photograph also records a place tied to the conflict's detention system.
