Mayo's Bridge carried traffic across the James River between Richmond and Manchester, and this view records what was left of it after the Confederate capital fell in early April 1865. As Confederate forces withdrew, they burned bridges and other structures to slow pursuing Union troops, and the fires left this crossing in ruins. The photograph belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, the large body of Civil War-era views assembled by Mathew Brady and Levin Handy, and it was published by Taylor & Huntington. Its subject, a shattered river crossing, reflects the wider destruction that marked the war's end in Richmond.
