The Richmond & Danville Railroad bridge shown here lay in ruins when this stereograph was made in 1865, the year Richmond fell to Union forces in April. The rail line had linked the Confederate capital to Danville, a route that carried troops, supplies and refugees during the final campaign, and its bridges were prime targets as Union armies closed in. Captured by a War Photograph and Exhibition Company camera and printed from a wet collodion glass negative, the view records the wrecked crossing in the aftermath of the fighting, a reminder of how transportation networks were torn apart as the war ended.
