Mrs. Nelson's Crossing in Virginia is the setting here, where the ruined bridge of the Richmond and York River Railroad stands broken across the landscape. The photograph dates to 1864, a year when armies moved repeatedly through Virginia and railroads were prime targets, since lines like this one carried troops, supplies and wounded men. Made as a glass stereograph from a wet collodion negative, the image was meant to be viewed as a pair through a stereoscope, giving the remains a sense of depth. The subject tags link it to the Wilderness campaign of 1864, when fighting in the region disrupted transport lines throughout the spring.
