Wrecked spans of the Richmond and Fredericksburg Railroad over the North Anna River in Virginia are the focus here, captured on two glass plates that form a stereograph pair for viewing through a stereoscope. The railroad linked Richmond with Fredericksburg, and during the Overland Campaign of 1864 both armies relied on such lines for supplies and troop movements, which made bridges like this one frequent targets for destruction. The wet collodion process required photographers to coat and expose their plates on site, so the image preserves a direct record of the damage left behind after the fighting along the river that spring.
