Ruins of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad depot stand in this April 1865 view, made in the days after Union troops occupied the Confederate capital. As Confederate forces withdrew, fires set on April 2 and 3 spread through much of the city, and rail facilities were among the structures left as charred shells. The image survives as a stereograph pair, two glass negative plates made by the wet collodion process, meant to be viewed through a stereo viewer for a three-dimensional effect. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, the year after the war ended.
