Chimneys rising above ruin are what set this stereograph apart from the other Richmond views on the board: the brick stacks stand alone where the houses and shops around them have burned away. The fire of April 1865 destroyed much of the city's business district as Confederate authorities evacuated and Union forces took the capital, and the scene shows how little was left standing afterward. James F. Gibson, who made many Civil War views for the photographic trade, recorded it on wet collodion glass, and the two plates were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect.
