Sailors crouch and bend over the brass fittings of the U.S.S. Richmond, the kind of routine "bright work" polishing that kept a steel warship presentable at anchor or in port. The cruiser was commissioned in 1890 and served in the Navy's fleet during the years that followed, including the Spanish-American War. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photography firm whose large glass-plate negatives documented American places and people in the late 1890s. Its shipboard detail, with men working in close quarters on the deck, shows the labor behind a warship's appearance.
