Few hotels in Richmond drew as much attention in the early 1900s as the Jefferson, a downtown landmark that catered to business travelers and visitors to the Virginia capital. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American towns, hotels and scenery to a national market. Its photographers worked in the decade when hotels were becoming symbols of civic pride, and the company's large-format plates recorded such buildings with a level of detail that smaller cameras could not match. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
