Palms fill the rotunda of the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, arranged around a statue of Thomas Jefferson, the hotel's namesake. Lavish indoor garden courts like this one were a fashionable feature of turn-of-the-century luxury hotels, where guests gathered in lobbies that doubled as social spaces. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format views of American cities and resorts in the early twentieth century. It shows how a grand hotel presented itself to visitors during those years.
