The grand staircase rising through the lobby of the Jefferson Hotel is the feature that sets this view apart from the many hotel interiors in the Detroit Publishing Company's files. The hotel opened in Richmond in 1895 and was known as one of the most elegant hotels in the South, so its lobby was built to impress arriving guests. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from Detroit around the turn of the twentieth century, sold views like this one to travel promoters and to hotels and railroads that wanted to show off their properties. This glass negative, made around 1908, preserves the formal, carefully arranged look of luxury interiors from that era.
