Murphy's Hotel was one of the commercial hotels that served travelers in downtown Richmond, Virginia, when this glass negative was made around 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American towns, cities, and landscapes in the early 1900s, recorded the building as part of its broader survey of the country. The 8 x 10 inch glass plate offers the sharp detail that made these negatives valued for printing, and its catalog number and handwritten marks show how it was tracked through the company's files before reaching the Library of Congress.
