The Jefferson Hotel was among the most prominent hotels in Richmond, Virginia, when this view was made, and its grand scale and classical design made it a point of civic pride. Opened in 1895, it drew travelers, politicians and visitors to the city's downtown. This picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities, landscapes and resorts for sale as postcards and prints in the early twentieth century. The negative's date is estimated to fall between 1910 and 1920, so it captures the hotel during the years when Richmond was growing as a commercial center.
