Seven Pines, a crossroads east of Richmond, lent its name to the battle fought there on May 31 and June 1, 1862, which is also called Fair Oaks. Confederate attacks under Joseph E. Johnston stalled against Union lines along the Chickahominy, and Johnston's wounding left Robert E. Lee to take command of the army defending Richmond. These two nearly identical glass negatives date from about 1905, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing American landmarks and battlefields for a wide public audience.
