The house in this view is the Elizabeth Van Lew mansion, the Richmond home of a woman who ran one of the most effective Union intelligence networks in the Confederate capital during the Civil War. Van Lew, a Unionist from a prominent Richmond family, used the house and her household staff to pass information to Union forces, and she remained a controversial figure in the city long after the war ended. This c1905 glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns and landmarks, shows the building decades after those events.
