Seamen sewing on the forecastle of the U.S.S. Richmond make this an unusually domestic scene on a warship's bow deck. The Richmond was a protected cruiser of the steel navy that the United States began building in the 1880s, and the ship's crew kept up everyday tasks like mending clothing far from home. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative as part of a large body of American views of ships, cities and landscapes, and the date range is estimated from the company's 1901 catalog.
