Richmond's Emancipation Day observance, captured here around 1905, recalls April 3, 1865, when Union troops entered the Confederate capital shortly after its evacuation. In the decades that followed, such commemorations became important gatherings for Black communities across Virginia and the South, combining speeches, music, and public processions with reunions of family and neighbors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, traveled widely to document American towns and cities, and its crowd scenes offer a useful view of how these celebrations looked in the early twentieth century.
