The bronze statue of Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman who served as Speaker of the House and championed the compromises of the 1820s through 1850, stands in Richmond's Capitol Square, in the shadow of Thomas Jefferson's state capitol. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American views taken from the 1890s into the 1920s. The image shows the monument as Richmond's visitors would have seen it at the turn of the twentieth century, when Clay's reputation as the "Great Compromiser" was still widely honored.
