Capitol Square in Richmond holds this equestrian statue of Confederate general Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, sculpted by Edward Valentine and unveiled in 1875. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates to about 1905 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely to photograph American towns, parks and monuments for sale as prints and postcards. Around the turn of the century, the monument stood among the government buildings of the state capital, which made it a frequent subject for photographers. The plate gives a clear record of the statue as it appeared in that era.
