Main Street in downtown Richmond, Virginia, runs past with streetcar tracks laid down the middle of the roadway, a reminder that the city was among the first in the country to electrify its streetcars. Richmond's system, which opened in 1888 under the engineer Frank J. Sprague, helped turn the commercial district into a busy hub of shops and offices by the turn of the century. The view dates to about 1905 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns, and its glass negative preserves the storefronts and street life of the period.
