Looking east down Main Street from Eleventh Street, this view shows the commercial heart of downtown Richmond, Virginia, during the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company made it as a large glass dry plate negative, dated between 1905 and 1920, when the firm was documenting American cities and selling views of them to a national market. Main Street was one of the city's principal shopping and business thoroughfares, so the scene's storefronts, signs and street traffic reflect the commercial life of the period. The plate later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado and was given to the Library of Congress in 1949.
