Carey and Governor Streets sat in the lower part of Richmond, Virginia, near the James River, and by May 1865 this corner had been reduced to rubble. The Confederate capital fell in early April 1865, and fires set during the evacuation and the Union occupation that followed destroyed large parts of the city's commercial district. Photographs like this one, printed on albumen paper, were among the first widely circulated records of a Southern city after the war. The image shows how thoroughly the fighting and fires had changed ordinary streets, leaving little standing for residents to return to.
