Richmond fell to Union forces in early April 1865, and the fires set as Confederate troops withdrew left whole blocks of the downtown business district in ruin. This albumen print, titled by Library of Congress staff because the original carried no caption, records one of those streets in the weeks that followed, when the city was under occupation and rebuilding had barely begun. Its subjects are the war damage and the street itself, so the picture is less a portrait of one building than a survey of what the destruction left behind. Albumen prints of this period were made from glass negatives and were the main way Americans saw the aftermath of the conflict.
