Few sites in Richmond show the cost of the Confederate war effort as plainly as the city's arsenal, whose broken walls Alexander Gardner photographed for his sketchbook. The record dates the negative to April 1863, but the print was made later for the bound volume that Philp & Solomons issued in Washington around 1866. Confederate arsenal works like this one produced and stored arms and ammunition, and their ruin became a familiar subject for photographers recording the war's aftermath in the city.
