The drawing shows the ruined water wheel of the Gallego Flour Mills in Richmond, Virginia, and its record is dated April 13, 1865, nine days after the Confederate capital fell. Richmond's mills and warehouses were among the many structures damaged in the fires that swept the city as Confederate forces withdrew and Union troops entered in early April. The artist worked in pencil and white pigment on olive-toned paper, a choice that gives the scene a muted, sober cast. The catalog also lists women among the subjects, a reminder that civilians lived with the wreckage as well as the soldiers.
