Few Richmond scenes capture the aftermath of the Civil War as directly as the ruins of the Gallego Flour Mill. Richmond had served as the Confederate capital, and when the city fell in early April 1865, fires set during the evacuation, aggravated by strong winds, destroyed much of the downtown and riverfront industry. Photographer James F. Gibson, born in 1828, recorded the damage on a glass stereograph negative made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. The picture offers a useful view of how the city's commercial district looked in the months after the fighting ended.
