A rock face rises above the Susquehanna near Danville, Pennsylvania, and along the riverbank, canal works, railroad tracks, and horse-drawn wagons share the same narrow stretch of ground. Danville sat on the river's North Branch, where a canal once carried coal and lumber downstream before railroads took over much of the freight. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landscapes across the country in the early 1900s, made negatives like this one for use in postcards and travel views. The scene shows how canal, rail, and road still crowded together in the valley at that time.
