Surf breaks over the rocks near the Churn, a spot on Marblehead Neck, the rocky peninsula on Massachusetts's North Shore that juts into Massachusetts Bay. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which made large numbers of views of American towns, coasts, and resorts for travel promotion around the turn of the twentieth century. Because the company's plates were often sold as souvenir prints, this scene of open water striking the shoreline reflects the appeal of seaside places to visitors from inland cities. The plate itself is an 8 by 10 inch dry plate negative, a format commonly used for detailed landscape work of that era.
