The Old Colonel William Lee mansion stands in Marblehead, a fishing and shipping town on Massachusetts Bay that was among the more active ports of colonial New England. Lee, a merchant and militia colonel, built the house in the late 1760s, when Marblehead's maritime trade made its wealthier families prosperous. This c1906 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country recording towns, landmarks and historic houses. By the early twentieth century, many colonial-era homes like this one were becoming objects of antiquarian interest, and the photograph captures the building as it was seen then, with its age already part of its appeal.
