The John Ward House in Salem, Massachusetts, is preserved in this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made around 1906. Salem holds many surviving dwellings from the 1600s and early 1700s, and by the turn of the century their age was drawing attention from preservationists and visitors as the city's maritime trade had faded. The Detroit Publishing Company, which commissioned photographers to record American towns and buildings, made the picture, and the negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949 through the State Historical Society of Colorado. The house's plain, weathered façade reflects the building traditions of its period.
