Salem's North Bridge sets this view apart. On February 26, 1775, British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Leslie were blocked here from seizing cannon stored in town. Colonists raised the drawbridge span over the North River and faced the soldiers until Leslie agreed to withdraw without a fight. Made around 1906, the image shows the site when interest in colonial landmarks was growing, and the historical marker and street in view show how the spot was being remembered.
