Echo Bridge spans the Charles River in Newton, Massachusetts, and this view records its stone arches at a time when the structure was already a local landmark. Built in the 1870s to carry Boston's water supply pipes across the river, the bridge was an engineering work as much as a crossing, and its name comes from the echo that returns from its arches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative between 1895 and 1910, was documenting American towns, rivers and landscapes for sale as commercial views, so the picture reflects how the company presented such sites to a national audience.
