Few places in Cambridge capture the rowing life of the early twentieth century as directly as the Charles River and its boat club. The Cambridge Boat Club sat on the river's edge, and this glass negative shows its clubhouse and waterfront as photographers of the Detroit Publishing Company recorded them in the years between 1910 and 1920. The Detroit firm was known for large-format views of American towns, rivers and landmarks, sold as color and photographic prints to travelers and schools. Rowing on the Charles was a point of civic pride in Cambridge, and the clubhouse served as a gathering place for oarsmen, students and local families.
