The clubhouse of the Bass Rocks Golf Club, on the Atlantic shore of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is captured here with a parked automobile whose license plate reads 1910, which helps place the picture in the early 1910s. Bass Rocks was a seaside district where summer residents and visitors gathered, and golf was a popular pastime among the well-to-do along the North Shore at the time. The photographer worked for the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format glass negatives of towns, resorts and landscapes across the country for promotion and sale. The clubhouse and the car together show how leisure travel and automobiles were reshaping coastal recreation in New England.
