Gloucester, on Cape Ann north of Boston, was a working fishing port, and this view of its Main Street shows the commercial district that served it in the early 1900s, with streetcar tracks running down the middle of the roadway. The negative was made as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large series of American views, a commercial venture that sold photographs and hand-colored prints to travelers and buyers across the country. Its catalog number and the note "Taylor 47" on the negative suggest how the plate was labeled and tracked through the firm's files before it reached the Library of Congress.
