Main Street and the town common in Plymouth, New Hampshire, appear here as they looked around 1908, when the village sat in the Pemigewasset Valley. The view was made as a dry plate glass negative, one of the large-format plates the Detroit Publishing Company used to build its catalog of American towns, scenery, and streets. The company sold these views as postcards and prints, and its work from this period is valued for documenting small New England communities in the years before the automobile reshaped their main streets. The shot shows the open common alongside the street, a reminder of how central these shared green spaces were to civic life.
