Wabasha Street in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, is the subject of this view, made around 1908 on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The street takes its name from Wabasha, a line of Dakota leaders associated with the region, and by the early twentieth century it was lined with shops and businesses serving a busy river city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many city views for sale to travelers and dealers, made the picture. The original plate was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and eventually reached the Library of Congress. Commercial streetscapes like this one show how storefronts, signs and street life looked before later rebuilding.
