Few views in the Detroit Publishing Company collection capture a lake at dusk quite like this one, a glass-plate negative of Lake Como in St. Paul, Minnesota, taken around 1908. The park's lake, set among the city's west-side parkland, was a popular spot for Saint Paul residents to stroll and relax in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced large numbers of scenic views like this one for sale as postcards and souvenir prints. Its photographers often sought out calm water and soft evening light, which is why this sunset scene reflects the company's wider interest in showing America's landscapes and public places at their most inviting.
