Fort Snelling sits on a bluff where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet, and this view of its lower post catches the place as it looked around 1908, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American scenery and landmarks for sale as photochrom prints. Built in the 1820s by the U.S. Army, the fort guarded the northern frontier and the fur trade, and by the early twentieth century it had become a quieter installation, its older stone buildings a reminder of the frontier army's early days. The glass negative, made on an 8 by 10 inch plate, preserves the detail that the company's color reproductions later drew on.
