Two nearly identical glass negatives record this Minneapolis post office, one of the federal buildings that anchored civic life in American cities around 1908. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document towns, streets, and public buildings for sale as souvenirs and travel views, and its large 8 by 10 inch glass plates captured fine architectural detail. Post offices of this period were often the most imposing structures in a city's center, so views like this show how the federal government presented itself to residents and visitors. The near-duplicate exposures suggest the photographer took more than one plate to get the best composition.
