Shelvin Hall was one of the early buildings on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, a school then growing quickly as the state's public university and drawing students from across Minnesota. This view was made as a glass negative between 1900 and 1910, a period when many American colleges were adding brick halls and classrooms to accommodate rising enrollments. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document towns, campuses, and landmarks for commercial sale. Its catalog number and the state historical society gift record show how the plate passed through the company's files before reaching the Library of Congress.
