Alumni Memorial Hall, on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, is the building this view centers on, shown here as the university was growing into one of the largest public campuses in the Midwest. The glass negative, roughly 8 by 10 inches, was made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely to document American towns, landmarks, and institutions. Its views were often sold as printed souvenirs, so the picture reflects how a campus like this one was presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
