The south face of the University of Michigan's Chemistry Building in Ann Arbor is the subject here, captured on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative made sometime between 1905 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated as a commercial photographer and publisher of views across the United States in that period, produced the image as part of its large catalog of landscapes, campus scenes and town streets. Such views were often sold as postcards and stereo-style prints, so the sharp, evenly lit exposure reflects the care the company gave to architectural subjects. The plate's survival and its 1949 donation to the State Historical Society of Colorado are a reminder of how many of these negatives passed through collectors before reaching the Library of Congress.
